Henry Walter Bates was an English naturalist and explorer renowned for his pioneering studies of mimicry in the animal kingdom. His most significant contribution came during his eleven-year expedition to the Amazon rainforest, which he undertook alongside fellow naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace starting in 1848. While Wallace returned to England in 1852, Bates continued his explorations, meticulously documenting the rich biodiversity of the region. By the time he returned home in 1859, he had sent back over 14,712 species, with around 8,000 considered new to science. His extensive research laid the groundwork for future studies in ecology and evolutionary biology. Bates's findings were encapsulated in his influential book, The Naturalist on the River Amazons, published in 1863. This work not only detailed his observations of the Amazonian ecosystem but also introduced the concept of mimicry, which would later become a crucial element in the study of natural selection. Bates's legacy endures in the fields of entomology and evolutionary theory, as his insights into mimicry and adaptation have profoundly influenced scientific thought and research.
“There is something in a tropical forest akin to the ocean in its effect on the mind. Man feels so completely his insignificance there and the vastness of nature.”
“... on these expanded membranes [butterfly wings] Nature writes, as on a tablet, the story of the modifications of species, so truly do all changes of the organisation register themselves thereon. Moreover, the same colour-patterns of the wings generally show, with great regularity, the degrees of blood-relationship of the species. As the laws of nature must be the same for all beings, the conclusions furnished by this group of insects must be applicable to the whole world.”
