Christopher Langan was an American horse rancher and former bar bouncer, renowned for his exceptionally high IQ, which earned him a place in high-IQ societies and a listing in the Guinness Book of Records under the pseudonym Eric Hart. His intelligence, however, did not translate into conventional success; he dropped out of college twice and became a subject of Malcolm Gladwell's 2008 book, "Outliers: The Story of Success." In this work, Gladwell explored the factors influencing Langan's life trajectory, comparing him to notable figures like J. Robert Oppenheimer and examining how environment shapes success. Beyond his high IQ, Langan devoted much of his life to developing his own philosophical framework, the "cognitive-theoretic model of the universe," which he argued posits reality as a self-simulation. He self-published a book on this concept in 2002. Langan's views extended into controversial territory, as he expressed beliefs in various fringe theories, including eugenics and conspiracy theories surrounding events like 9/11. His political opinions have garnered him a following within alt-right circles, marking him as a polarizing figure in contemporary discussions about intelligence and ideology.
