Zen Buddhism, and Its Relation to Art

Published in 1922, 'Zen Buddhism, and Its Relation to Art' by Arthur Waley is a scholarly examination of Zen Buddhism's origins and its influence on art. The book traces Zen's development from the 6th century monk Bodhidharma through its various sects, emphasizing the philosophy's focus on direct experience over scriptures. Waley explores how Zen ideology manifests in East Asian art, arguing that Zen art reflects the artist's inner state and understanding of reality, thus highlighting the deep connection between Zen philosophy and creative expression.
