Young Sioux Warrior

Little Bear is seventeen summers old, and still he has not earned his warrior's name. In the villages of the Sioux, a boy is nothing until he has proved himself in hunt, in council, and in battle. This is the story of his becoming: a tale of long winters spent listening to elders, of tracking elk through frozen valleys, of tense encounters with rival tribes that test not just his courage but his judgment. Kroll renders the rhythms of Plains life with tactile detail, the weight of a bow, the smoke curling from tipis at dawn, the weight of expectation pressing on young shoulders. But what elevates this coming-of-age tale beyond simple adventure is its understanding that true bravery isn't the absence of fear; it's the willingness to act despite it. Little Bear's journey from boy to warrior is one that readers who have ever felt the desperate need to prove themselves will recognize immediately.
