Ye Olde Mint

Before American coins carried any meaning, they had to be made. This book tells the story of the first United States Mint, born in Philadelphia in 1792, when the young nation was still figuring out who it wanted to be. Frank H. Stewart was the Mint's official historian, and he wrote with the reverence of someone who understood what this building represented: the concrete act of economic sovereignty. Here are the debates that preceded it, the men who built it (Washington appointing David Rittenhouse as first director), and the unglamorous daily problems: securing gold, calibrating presses, preventing theft. Stewart preserves photographs and architectural details of buildings that no longer exist, giving us access to a physical world that disappeared. What elevates this beyond an institutional chronicle are the neighborhood stories and local legends Stewart gathered, the human texture surrounding the making of money. For numismatists, historians, and anyone curious about the material origins of American commerce, this remains an essential document. It captures a moment when the nation was quite literally minting its future.
