wunderthätige Unterröckchen
Set in the misty borderlands of the Giant Mountains, where Silesia meets Bohemia, this gleefully irreverent legend revolves around a miraculous petticoat of extraordinary supernatural properties. The story follows the roguish adventures of knights and peasants alike as they encounter the legendary mountain spirit Rübezahl, a figure of immense power and capricious humor who rules from his realm beneath the peaks. With tongue firmly in cheek, the anonymous author weaves a tale of chivalry, cunning, and quite a lot of stealing, while the subtitle's promised letters from Rübezahl himself add another layer of playful deception to the proceedings. The chapter titles oscillate between the cryptic and the frankly indecipherable, rewarding those who pay attention with knowing winks and double meanings. Zaunkönig's antiquated prose, with its labyrinthine sentences and archaisms, only amplifies the sense that you're reading something both ancient and deliberately, beautifully absurd. It's folklore wearing a wig and pretending to be respectable.
