Wordsworth

This Victorian biography, written by a poet who walked the same Lake District lanes as its subject, offers an intimate portrait of William Wordsworth that no later scholarly distance could replicate. F. W. H. Myers knew surviving family members and drew upon material unavailable to modern biographers, crafting a portrait that feels less like academic assessment and more like witnessing a cultured Victorian mind grappling with the enigma of genius. The biography traces Wordsworth from his birth in 1770 Cockermouth through the devastating losses of both parents by his thirteenth year, showing how grief and the northern English landscape became inextricable in his poetic imagination. Myers is particularly attentive to the formation of Wordsworth's radical philosophical vision, that belief in nature as a living presence rather than mere scenery, which would reshape English poetry forever. The book's greatest strength lies in its reverence without worship; Myers honors Wordsworth's privacy while still revealing the emotional landscapes that produced lines still murmured today. For readers curious about where Romantic poetry came from, or who want to understand the flesh-and-blood man behind the monuments, this biography offers a window into a world where verse and life were not yet separate disciplines.
