Women of History: Selected from the Writings of Standard Authors

This 1719 collection gathers biographical portraits of remarkable women from antiquity and beyond, selected from the works of established classical authors. The sketches trace figures whose lives altered the course of history: Lucretia, whose defiance sparked the revolution that overthrew the Roman monarchy; Sappho, the lyrical genius of Lesbos whose poetry defined emotional passion; Aspasia, the intellectual force who shaped Athenian philosophy and politics; and Cornelia, the model Roman mother who raised the reformist Gracchi brothers. These accounts, written by ancient and classical historians, present women not as peripheral figures but as central actors whose virtues, tragedies, and triumphs drove historical change. The compilation reflects an early effort to preserve and celebrate feminine legacy against the erasures of time, offering modern readers a window into how earlier generations remembered and revered women's contributions to civilization. For scholars of classical history and readers fascinated by the forgotten architects of antiquity, these collected portraits prove that women's spirits have always shaped the world, even when history attempted to write them out.
