Women in the Life of Balzac

Balzac created some of fiction's most unforgettable women: the ruthless schemers, the long-suffering angels, the desperate social climbers. But who shaped the man who imagined them? This early 20th-century biographical study traces the real female influences that forged one of literature's greatest inventors of female character. Floyd examines Balzac's tumultuous bond with his ambitious mother in Tours, whose demanding expectations first ignited his creative fire, and the older Madame de Berny who became his first literary mentor, lover, and guide into Parisian literary society. The book illuminates how a lifetime of complex relationships with mothers, mentors, protectors, and rivals fed directly into the astonishing psychological depth of his novels. For readers fascinated by literary biography, the inner lives of the Romantics, or the eternal question of how love shapes art, this volume offers a window into the emotional machinery behind one of France's most prolific geniuses.
