With Steyn and De Wet

A telegraph operator's raw, intimate account of the Second Boer War, seen from inside the Boer ranks. F.F. Pienaar draws readers into the machinery of conflict, the dispatches flashing across the veld, the waiting for news of battles and loved ones, the moment when personal loss transforms a civilian into a soldier. The narrative follows his journey from quiet observation at the Convento de Christo in Thomar to active participation alongside General Christiaan de Wet, one of the most cunning guerrilla leaders in military history. Pienaar captures what few war accounts achieve: the strange duality of modern warfare, where information travels faster than men, and the telegraph office becomes a threshold between the war's terrible reality and those still untouched by it. His prose carries the urgency of someone writing while memory remains fresh, rendering the Boer cause not as political abstraction but as lived experience, hope, grief, and stubborn resistance against overwhelming force.
