With Haig on the Somme

The Somme, summer 1916. In the trenches, Private Harry Hawke waits with his rifle, a marksman whose steady hands have become both weapon and lifeline. His officer, Captain Bob Dashwood, leads with the grim knowledge that something vast and terrible is coming. Then Dennis arrives, the captain's younger brother, fresh from training and still carrying the kind of hope that two years of war should have burned away. The Dashwood brothers, Hawke, and the men around them brace for what everyone senses but cannot name. Written in 1917 while the Somme's mud was still unclotted, this novel captures the claustrophobic tension before the Big Push, the sniper's bullet that felled an officer, and the bonds between men who measure their futures in hours. Parry's contemporaneous account offers something rare: not hindsight's clarity, but the present's raw uncertainty. This is the war as the soldiers lived it, waiting in the dark.
