Winning a Cause: World War Stories

Written in the aftermath of the Great War, this collection of stories aimed to teach young American readers why their nation had fought and what victory had cost. John G. Thompson weaves together narratives of heroism, sacrifice, and moral awakening, tracing the arc from American isolationism to the painful recognition that engagement was necessary to preserve liberty against authoritarian aggression. The stories capture pivotal moments: the first American soldiers to fall in battle, the clash between American ideals of peace and Germany's military strategy, and the gradual realization among citizens that their involvement was vital, not optional. For modern readers, these stories offer a remarkable window into how the generation that lived through the war processed its trauma and attempted to transmit hard-won lessons to youth who would never know combat. The book endures not as literature but as historical artifact, revealing how Americans once understood their place in a world reshaped by violence.
