Windmills and Wooden Shoes

What if childhood looked like this: golden light spilling across Dutch dikes, wooden shoes clicking on cobblestones, windmills turning slow against enormous skies? This 1919 gem captures a vanished world through the eyes of two children, Jan and Katrina, whose daily adventures feel both foreign and achingly familiar. From tending goats in morning mist to dancing around maypoles, from the clatter of wooden shoes to the smell of fresh bread baking, Grant paints Holland in tiny, perfect details. Each short chapter offers a new window into this gentle world: the children's chores and play, the rhythms of the seasons, the close-knit community where neighbors know each other's names. It's an unashamedly nostalgic portrait, yes, but one that treats its subjects with genuine affection and attention. Perfect for families seeking read-aloud adventures or children curious about how other kids lived long ago, this book offers a tender portrait of childhood in another time and place.
