Wilmot and Tilley

This book captures a pivotal moment in Canadian democracy through the lives of two men who refused to accept a corrupt system. Lemuel Allan Wilmot and Leonard Tilley fought for responsible government in mid-19th century New Brunswick, a colony where political power belonged to a privileged elite and ordinary people had no voice. Hannay writes with the immediacy of someone who knew these men and understood what was at stake: nothing less than the birth of modern democracy in British North America. The narrative follows their struggle against a system where positions were bought and sold, where the few ruled the many, and where reform seemed impossible. Each chapter documents the personal cost of challenging the establishment, the legislative battles, and ultimately the victory that transformed how Canadians would be governed. The book matters because it shows how change actually happens: not through abstraction but through stubborn, often lonely individuals willing to stake everything on a principle. For anyone interested in Canadian political history or the roots of democratic governance, this is a vivid portrait of reform in action.
