Wilde Bob

Wilde Bob is the boy every parent warns their children about, and every child wants to be friends with. Set in a turn-of-the-century Dutch village, Cornelis Johannes Kieviet's 1907 classic follows the exploits of Bob, a whirlwind of mischief whose nickname says everything you need to know. When Bob arrives at Dorus's door, homework is forgotten instantly. There's the legendary incident with the village pump that leaves half the town soaked and laughing. There's the running battle with the local shoemaker, who has learned to recognize the particular thunder of Wilde Bob's footsteps. This is childhood at its most gloriously untamed: a world where a single afternoon holds infinite possibility, where a boy's reputation precedes him through every lane and alley, where getting caught is just part of the fun. Kieviet captures something universal about the energy and chaos of being young, the way a single friend can transform a boring afternoon into an adventure worth recounting for decades.
