Who Can Be Happy and Free in Russia? is an epic poem by Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov, first published in 1879. It explores the lives of Russian peasants engaged in a philosophical debate about happiness and freedom amidst their harsh realities. The narrative features a group of seven peasants discussing who among them can be considered truly happy, revealing deeper themes of social critique and human resilience. The poem was originally published in parts starting in 1866, with the only full English translation released in 1917 by Juliet Soskice.
