Where Art Begins

What does it mean for art to truly begin? Hume Nisbet poses this question at the turn of a revolutionary century, when photography threatens to render the painter's eye obsolete and industrial society threatens to render beauty irrelevant. His answer: art begins not in the hand but in the heart. Nisbet argues that technical mastery without emotional resonance produces nothing more than sophisticated decoration; true art requires the artist to translate human feeling into form that moves others. Drawing on his own journey from student to teacher, he explores how painting and photography, then newly reconciled as sister arts, share a common purpose: to capture something true about the human experience. His treatise moves between philosophical reflection and practical wisdom, examining why some works endure while others fade, and what it means to use one's craft in service of charity, understanding, and beauty. For art students weary of mere technique, or anyone curious about what Victorian thinkers believed art owed to humanity, this book reorients the reader toward art's deeper question: not how to paint, but why we must.
