Westward Empire: Or, The Great Drama of Human Progress

Published in 1856, this is a grand philosophical history that argues civilization has always moved westward, from ancient empires through Renaissance Europe to the expanding American republic. Magoon, a preacher-historian, constructs an ambitious argument: that divine providence guides humanity's journey, with each culture contributing its gifts to the accumulating treasury of human achievement. The book weaves together art, science, literature, philosophy, and religion into a sweeping narrative of progress, examining how successive ages built upon one another. Magoon writes with the confident Victorian belief that history has direction and purpose, and that America represents the latest and perhaps greatest chapter in humanity's westward march. Part intellectual history, part theological argument, part manifest destiny apologetic, this book captures a particular 19th-century American moment when expansion seemed synonymous with Providence itself. For readers interested in understanding how educated Americans once conceived of their place in history, this is an indispensable window into Victorian-era assumptions about progress, purpose, and the sweep of civilization.
