Ways of War and Peace

Written in the sweltering summer of 1914, this intimate memoir captures Europe in the weeks before everything burned. Delia Austrian observes the continent with clear eyes: beauty and brutality existing in the same frame, peace activists working desperately against a tide they cannot stop. The book centers on her correspondence with Anna Eckstein, an American woman who had devoted her life to preventing exactly the catastrophe now unfolding. Their deferred meeting becomes a small tragedy in itself - a lunch that will never happen because the world has chosen war. Austrian writes without melodrama, letting the paradoxes speak for themselves: nations throttling each other while simultaneously sending aid, love and murder coexisting in the same heartbeat. This is not a history of WWI but a document from inside its opening days, when the future was still unwritten and people still believed peace might return. For readers seeking first-person accounts from the war's edge, before the trenches made everything inevitable.
