War's Brighter Side: The Story of the Friend Newspaper Edited by the Correspondents with Lord Roberts's Forces, March-April, 1900

History - British, History - Modern (1750+), History - Warfare

In the sweltering South African veldt of 1900, as British forces pressed deeper into the Orange Free State during the Second Boer War, a group of war correspondents made a daring decision: their fellow soldiers deserved more than battlefield dispatches and homesick letters. They would publish a newspaper. Thus was born The Friend, printed under impossible conditions, distributed to troops who'd marched through food shortages and drunk from contaminated water supplies. Julian Ralph, himself a correspondent with Lord Roberts's forces, chronicles this remarkable enterprise with sharp observation and unexpected humor. He introduces us to Lord Stanley, the accommodating censor, and the fellow editors who scraped together a publication from whatever materials could be salvaged. The result is neither a war history nor a military memoir, but something rarer: a portrait of soldiers clinging to normalcy, wit, and connection even as shells fell nearby. Ralph captures the camaraderie that emerges when journalists and Tommies alike discover that a crude newspaper, passed from hand to hand in camp, can be as vital as ammunition. This is history from an odd angle, showing how the impulse to publish, to laugh, and to share news survives even in the most unlikely places.
