War Medals and Their History

Before the twentieth century, ordinary soldiers bled and died in battles whose details would vanish with them. No memorial, no record, no small metal token to say they had mattered. William Augustus Steward's 1915 study traces the remarkable transformation from this anonymity to the formal systems of military decoration we recognize today, revealing how nations learned to pin meaning onto metal and hang it from a soldier's chest. Beginning with the earliest military decorations and moving through centuries of British campaigns, Steward interweaves the evolution of award systems with the human stories they were designed to honor: specific battles, forgotten heroes, the slow recognition that courage deserves more than a shared grave. Written during the First World War, this book carries an额外 weight, as Steward witnessed firsthand the very conflicts that would generate the next generation of medals. For collectors, historians, and anyone who has ever held a great-grandfather's medal and wondered about the story it tells, this remains an essential foundation text.
