War Dogs of the World War

What made soldiers endure the horror of the trenches? Sometimes, it was the wet nose of a dog pressed against their hand in the darkness. This early 20th-century tribute gathers the true stories of canine heroes who walked through hell alongside the men who fought there. We meet Bijou, who carried his fatally wounded master's final message across hundreds of miles back to a grieving family, and Monte, a picket dog whose warnings saved countless lives but left him scarred and worn. The book details how dogs were trained for messenger duty, sentry work, and the simple but vital task of providing comfort in a place where comfort did not exist. Written partly to raise funds for dogs wounded in the service of war, it captures something we often forget: that the bond between soldier and animal is as old as conflict itself, and just as tragic, and just as heroic.
