Vitus Bering: The Discoverer of Bering Strait

In the early 18th century, the outline of the world remained dangerously incomplete. Czar Peter the Great commissioned a Danish sea captain to answer one of geography's most urgent questions: did Asia and North America touch, or were they divided by open sea? This is the story of that expedition, and of the man who braved the unknown reaches of the Arctic to find the answer. Vitus Bering rose from humble beginnings in Horsens to command Russia's grandest exploratory ambitions, and his voyages would reshape how we understand the planet itself. Lauridsen, writing in 1889 with access to original records, reconstructs not merely the geographical discoveries but the human drama of men sailing into white emptiness, their ships locked in ice for months, their survival uncertain. The book follows Bering's first expedition across the vast Siberian coast and the second, fatal voyage that finally charted the strait bearing his name. It captures the collision of imperial will and Arctic reality, the scholarly debates of the Petrine era, and the quiet heroism of men mapping territory no European had ever seen. For readers who thrill to accounts of exploration at the edge of the world, this remains a vivid window into an age when a single voyage could change the map forever.
