Visions & Cants

Joan Maragall stands at the threshold of modern Catalan poetry, and "Visions & Cants" (1900) captures the moment when an ancient culture began to speak with a contemporary voice. This collection pulses with the restless energy of a Catalonia redefining itself at the turn of the twentieth century. In "Visions," Maragall excavates Catalan mythology, bringing figures like the mysterious Count Arnau and the legendary Joan Garí back to life through poems that hover between dream and doctrine, history and transcendence. The second movement, "Cants," erupts into celebration: the sardana dance, the sunlit landscape, the language reclaimed from silence. Yet even in joy, there's a longing that tinges these verses with melancholy, as if Maragall understood that every affirmation carries the weight of what remains unfulfilled. This is poetry as cultural resurrection and personal inquiry rolled into one. For readers seeking verse that burns with regional fire yet speaks to universal questions of belonging and selfhood, Maragall's collection remains essential.
