Violin Tone and Violin Makers

A passionate defense of sound over pedigree. Written in 1916, this treatise argues that the violin world had lost its way, obsessing over maker names and auction prices while neglecting the only thing that should matter: how an instrument actually sounds. Moya traces the evolution of violin tone from the Cremonese masters through his contemporary makers, examining the mysterious alchemy of wood, varnish, and craft that produces a great sound. He dismantles the mythology surrounding old Italian instruments, revealing how market forces and collector mania distorted how musicians evaluate what they play. The book is both a technical guide to understanding tonal quality and a polemic against the "curio-collector mindset" that prioritizes age and provenance over musical function. For anyone who has wondered why a $50,000 antique sometimes sounds inferior to a well-made modern instrument, Moya offers a rigorous, reasoned answer.
