Victor Hugo: His Life and Work

Victor Hugo lived the kind of life that his own novels could barely contain: born beneath Napoleon's shadow in 1802, he rose to become the conscience of France, a poet, novelist, and dramatist whose words could topple governments and move nations to tears. George Barnett Smith's biographical account, written in the late Victorian era, traces this extraordinary arc from Hugo's troubled childhood, haunted by fragile health and turbulent family circumstances, to his coronation as the undisputed master of French Romanticism. The book illuminates the making of a literary giant: the early poetic ambitions forged in poverty, the revolutionary dramas that shook Parisian theatre, and the unflinching social activism that made him both beloved and hunted. Smith situates Hugo against the sweep of French history, showing how the political upheavals of the 19th century the revolutions, the exiles, the Empire and its fall became the crucible for works like 'Les Misérables' and 'The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.' This is biography as portraiture, capturing not just the facts of a life but the temperament of an era.
