Verdun, Argonne-Metz, 1914-1918

Written in 1919 by an author who lived through the carnage, this is not a history book in the academic sense but something more haunting: a document composed while the smoke had barely cleared over the scarred earth of Verdun. The text traces the ancient fortress city's strategic significance through centuries of sieges before plunging into the cataclysm of 1916, when over 300 days of bombardment produced roughly 700,000 casualties. Yet this is neither mere chronicle nor combat narrative. Part historical analysis, part battlefield guidebook, it serves as a memorial instrument - the author writes for pilgrims who will walk these grounds seeking to understand what happened and why. The prose carries the particular weight of someone who knew these fields as both soldier and witness, equally invested in military tactics and in honoring the human cost. For readers today, it functions as a remarkable primary source: a window into how the first generation to experience industrialized war understood what they had survived.
