Published in 1768, 'Vampyrismus' by Freiherr van Swieten is a scientific examination of vampire folklore. The work analyzes the belief that deceased individuals can rise from their graves to harm the living, addressing misconceptions and superstitions prevalent in regions like Hungary, Moravia, and Poland. Van Swieten scrutinizes alleged cases of vampirism, advocating for a rational understanding of these phenomena and arguing against the validity of superstitions that lead to irrational actions against the deceased.
