University Education in Ireland

In 1868, Ireland simmered with educational inequality. Catholics, despite being the island's majority, faced devastating barriers to university access. Haughton's treatise enters this fractured landscape as both polemic and proposal - a passionate argument for what he sees as the just solution to Ireland's educational crisis. He systematically dismantles two competing proposals: the secularization of Trinity College Dublin and the creation of a federated National University. Neither, he argues, addresses the fundamental problem. Instead, he proposes establishing a distinctly Roman Catholic University that would honor both faith and intellectual rigor while preserving Ireland's Protestant educational heritage. The result is a window into a pivotal historical moment when Irish Catholics demanded representation in higher education - and reveals the enduring tension between religious identity and academic institutions that still echoes today. Essential reading for historians of Ireland, education policy, and Victorian religious politics.
