Under the Prophet in Utah; the National Menace of a Political Priestcraft
Published in 1911, 'Under the Prophet in Utah' by Frank J. Cannon provides a critical historical account of the political and social dynamics within the Mormon Church, particularly under the leadership of Joseph F. Smith. The book examines the intertwining of religious authority and political governance, portraying the Mormon hierarchy as a form of despotism that affected both its followers and the broader American society. Cannon, a former U.S. Senator from Utah, recounts his experiences and observations during a tumultuous period marked by persecution and the struggle for civil rights, highlighting the internal conflicts over polygamy and legal compliance within the church.
