UN Frère De Nicolas Foucquet: François, Archevêque De Narbonne; Exilé À Alençon

This is the story of a man who watched his brother's empire crumble and chose dignity over despair. François Foucquet, Archbishop of Narbonne, occupied a position of considerable ecclesiastical and political influence in 17th-century France until Nicolas Foucquet, the king's finance minister and one of the most powerful figures in the realm, was arrested in 1661. The dramatic fall of Nicolas the Surintendant, orchestrated by Colbert and perhaps even Louis XIV himself, swept François into exile in Alençon, far from the corridors of power where he had once moved. Louis François Marin Duval's historical account traces François's journey through this catastrophe, examining how he maintained his family's honor and his faith when both seemed lost. The narrative reveals the intimate cost of political ruin and the quiet resilience required to rebuild a life in exile. For readers fascinated by the tangled relationship between power, family, and religious duty in the age of Louis XIV, this biography offers a window into the human consequences of courtly betrayal.
