Types of Children's Literature: A Collection of the World's Best Literature for Children, for Use in Colleges, Normal Schools and Library Schools

This is a sprawling early 20th-century anthology that attempted to gather "the world's best literature for children" into one massive, systematic collection. Organized for use in colleges and library schools, it groups everything from nursery rhymes and fables to ballads, myths, and adventure tales into categories: poems, riddles, songs, proverbs, short stories, fairy tales. What makes this volume historically fascinating is not just its scope but what it reveals about canon formation: this is what scholars of the 1910s or 1920s considered the essential building blocks of a child's literary imagination. It's a snapshot of taste and pedagogy from an earlier era, offering educators a structured survey of the field. For modern readers, it works less as entertainment and more as a reference document and cultural artifact, showing how the discipline of children's literature was first organized and taught. The selections are genuine classics of their kind, even if the framing now feels dated.
