Two Little Travellers: A Story for Girls

Autumn settles over the Dene household, and beneath the golden cedar tree, two small figures cling to their father before the war takes him to South Africa. Darby and Joan have already lost their mother; now they face a father's departure, their small hearts full of a grief too large for their small frames. But children are resilient in ways adults forget, and the siblings find solace in the woods behind their home, where their mother once led them on adventures that now feel like sacred memory. What begins as imaginative play becomes a testing ground for courage. The woods demand bravery. The empty house demands resourcefulness. And the looming absence of their father demands a kind of quiet heroism that these two little travellers possess more of than they know. This is a story about the extraordinary resilience hidden in ordinary childhood, about how children process what would break grown-ups, and about the adventures that save us when the world grows too heavy. It endures because it trusts its young readers with real sadness and shows them they are stronger than they believe.
