Two Chancellors: Prince Gortchakof and Prince Bismarck

Julian Klaczko, writing as a Polish refugee with intimate access to the corridors of European power, offers a remarkable dual portrait of the two men who reshaped the continent: Prince Alexander Gortchakof, Russia's long-serving Chancellor, and Otto von Bismarck, the architect of German unification. What distinguishes this late 19th-century account is its unusual perspective, a Polish voice observing the inner workings of two imperial powers, tracking the friendship and fraught alliance between these two chancellors from 1855 to 1871. Klaczko traces how their collaborative efforts, despite underlying tensions and competing ambitions, influenced decisive moments: the Austro-Prussian War that broke Austria's dominance at Sadowa, and the Franco-Prussian War that culminated in the Battle of Sedan. The book reveals the intricate diplomatic dance between Russia and Prussia during a transformative era, showing how personal relationships between statesmen could alter the course of nations. For readers interested in 19th-century European history, the mechanics of great-power diplomacy, or the birth of the modern German state, this contemporary account provides unparalleled insight from a writer who witnessed these events unfold.
