Trooper 3809: A Private Soldier of the Third Republic is an autobiographical account by Lionel Decle, published in 1899. The book chronicles Decle's experiences as a conscript in the French cavalry, specifically the 9th Dragoons, and offers a candid look at military life during the late 19th century. It critiques the French army's systemic issues, particularly in light of the Dreyfus Affair, while humorously detailing the challenges faced by soldiers, including ill-fitting uniforms and the harsh realities of military discipline.
