Trekkerswee: Met Tekeninge Van J.H. Pierneef

A long narrative poem that functions as an elegy for a vanishing world. Totius traces the lives of Gert, Dina, and Willem, an Afrikaner family whose simple, God-fearing existence on the South African veld becomes unraveled by the forces of modernity. First comes gold, luring young men to the rising city of Johannesburg. Then comes war. The Anglo-Boereoorlog sweeps across the landscape, and when it recedes, nothing remains of the old order but memory. The book is both a deeply personal family tragedy and a meditation on displacement: the descendants of those who trekked inland to escape British rule now find themselves strangers in a transformed land. Pierneef's stark, spare drawings of empty landscapes amplify this sense of loss - the land endures, but the world it held is gone. Written in 1915, when the wounds of war were still fresh, Trekkerswee captures the particular grief of a people caught between heritage and history. It is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the emotional undercurrents of South African identity.
