Treading the Narrow Way

A working man's memoir of poverty, faith, and the deliberate choice to live rightly. Robert Emmett Barrett entered the workforce in his early teens, laboring in factories and mines, and he writes with the plainspoken authority of a man who knows what it means to struggle. Yet this is more than a tale of hardship; it's a thoughtful guide to moral living, drawing on his difficult upbringing and the spiritual convictions that sustained him. Through humor, hard reflection, and specific moments from his own journey, Barrett maps the moral terrain he traversed: the temptations, the compromises, and the choice to walk what he calls the narrow way instead of the broad road of least resistance. His faith is unapologetic, his examples concrete, and his hope genuine without ever becoming sentimental. The book endures because it doesn't romanticize virtue or pretend the path is easy. It simply argues, through one man's experience, that choosing the harder road leads to a fuller life, aligned with something larger than oneself.
