Traditional Nursery Songs of England, with Pictures by Eminent Modern Artists

Here are the nursery rhymes that have lived in English-speaking homes for centuries, first collected and illustrated in this charming 19th-century volume. Edited by Felix Summerly, the book gathers verses that every child still knows today: "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep" with its medieval echo, "Humpty Dumpty" and his famous fall, "Little Bo-Peep" hunting for her lost sheep. These aren't merely children's verses. They carry centuries of oral tradition, fragments of old English life, and the strange wisdom that settles into a culture's bones. The "eminent modern artists" of the Victorian era gave these ancient words new visual form, capturing a time when these rhymes were being gathered and preserved before they could slip away. For collectors of illustrated books, for parents who grew up on these same words, for anyone interested in how childhood was once imagined and recorded, this volume offers a delightful artifact. It reminds us that the simplest verses often carry the deepest history.
