Tijl Uilenspiegel in Vlaanderen, written by Jan Bruylants, is a retelling of the legendary figure Tijl Uilenspiegel, a trickster from the 16th century who roamed the Netherlands. Accompanied by his jovial friend Lamme Goedzak and his love Nele, Uilenspiegel is celebrated not only for his mischievous antics but also as a symbol of resistance against the French occupation. This work draws on the original legend first recorded by Charles de Coster in 1867, and has been translated into Flemish multiple times, making it a notable part of Flemish cultural heritage.
