Ti-Ping Tien-Kwoh: The History of the Ti-Ping Revolution (volume I)

In the mid-nineteenth century, China erupted in the bloodiest conflict the world had ever seen. The Taiping Rebellion claimed between twenty and thirty million lives and nearly toppled a three-hundred-year dynasty. Augustus Lindley, a young British naval officer, found himself uniquely positioned to witness history unfold from the inside. This volume traces Lindley's journey from his arrival in colonial Hong Kong, through his growing fascination with the Taiping cause, to his eventual deep involvement with Hong Xiuquan's heterodox Christian movement. Hong, a failed scholar who experienced visions of heaven and believed himself the younger brother of Jesus, had mobilized a revolutionary army against the Manchu Qing dynasty in the name of radical religious and social reform. Lindley offers readers an extraordinary Western lens on this apocalyptic civil war: the court politics of the Taipings, the military campaigns, the strange blend of millenarian Christianity and Chinese tradition that powered the movement. More than a historical record, this is the memoir of a man seduced by a cause. Lindley's prose captures the tropical languor of Hong Kong harbor, the terror of battle, and the unsettling question of where his loyalties truly lie. For anyone seeking to understand the catastrophe that reshaped modern China, or the strange calculus of a foreigner who chose sides in someone else's revolution, this remains an indispensable primary source.
