Three Years in France with the Guns: Being Episodes in the Life of a Field Battery

Three Years in France with the Guns captures the brutal, bizarre, and often blackly funny reality of serving in a British field battery during the First World War. C.A. Rose arrived in France in August 1915 and spent the next three years navigating a world of mud, horses, exhausting routines, and sudden violent disruption. This is not a memoir of grand strategy or famous battles; it is the nitty-gritty of how artillerymen actually lived, from the grinding labor of keeping horses fed and guns limbered to the uncanny stretches of boredom between bombardments. Rose writes with an observational wit that feels distinctly English, finding absurdity in military absurdity while never flinching from what he witnesses. The book follows his battery through key engagements, but its power lies in the small stuff: the friendships, the privations, the way men adapt to a world where death arrives without warning. Written in 1919 while the memories were still raw, this is WWI from the ground up, filtered through someone who was there and paid attention.
