Three Times and Out: Told by Private Simmons, Written by Nellie L. Mcclung

Three times captured. Three times attempted escape. This is the raw, unflinching account of Private Simmons, a Canadian soldier whose World War I journey took him from the lumber camps of British Columbia to the killing fields of France to the brutal prisoner-of-war camps where he spent months enduring what he called 'the unspeakable.' Written in 1918 while the war still raged, this memoir arrives with the urgency of a man who had only just survived what he was recording. Simmons doesn't glorify combat or sentimentalize sacrifice. He documents the random terror of battle, the particular horror of waking in German hands, and the stubborn, almost foolish hope that kept him attempting escape after escape. Nellie L. McClung's pen gives voice to a soldier's experience with a directness that bypasses a century of historical distance. This is not事后 reconstruction but immediate testimony, the work of someone still breathing the smoke of the trenches. For readers seeking to understand what the Great War actually felt like to the Canadians who fought it, there are few documents as vital.
