Thousand Miles up the Nile

Published in 1877, 'Thousand Miles up the Nile' by Amelia Ann Blanford Edwards is a historical and cultural study of Egypt. As a pioneering Egyptologist, Edwards traveled extensively through Egypt during a time when few women ventured beyond their homes. The book became an immediate best-seller and is notable for influencing modern Egyptology and literature, particularly the Amelia Peabody Emerson series by Elizabeth Peters. Edwards also established the Edwards Chair of Egyptology, first held by Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie.
