In 1859, on the eve of Civil War, George S. Boutwell issued a radical challenge to American education: schools weren't merely places of learning, but instruments of moral and social transformation. This collection of essays and lectures draws on Milton, Locke, and antebellum reform thought to argue that true education must extend far beyond classical curricula and academic achievement. Boutwell insists that genuine learning encompasses ethical development, vocational preparation, and civic virtue the very qualities that might lift the "neglected and exposed classes" out of poverty and crime. As the nation teetered toward rupture, Boutwell made a provocative claim: that democratic America had failed its children, and that rebuilding education from the ground up might be the nation's best hope for redemption.
