This Way to Christmas

An eight-year-old boy, uprooted by war and sent to live in remote Hill Country with his rigid Irish caretaker, discovers that the neighbors Johanna dismisses as "heathen" carry Christmas stories more luminous than any he has known. David slips between worlds, listening to the mountain people and carrying their tales back to his keeper, who begins to see that faith and wonder need not look the way she was taught. In this tender, slight novel, Ruth Sawyer demonstrates that the truest magic of the season lives not in doctrine or belonging, but in the act of sharing stories across the divide. The boy's innocent openness becomes the bridge his elders could not build themselves, revealing that Christmas belongs to anyone willing to see another human being. A quiet, hopeful book about loneliness, belonging, and the way one child can teach grownups what it means to share a world.
