Thet Oera Linda Bok, Naar Een Handschrift Uit De Dertiende Eeuw

A mysterious manuscript surfaces in 19th-century Friesland, purporting to be a chronicle of the Frisian people dating back to the 13th century. The Oera Linda Bok traces the Frisians from legendary antiquity through their golden age as a seafaring civilization, before the rise of Rome, before the great flood that swallowed Atlantis. It recounts the wisdom of their queen-kings, the founding of their free constitution, and their fierce resistance to conquering empires. For over 150 years, scholars have argued about whether this is a genuine medieval artifact or one of literature's most audacious hoaxes. The manuscript surfaced in 1866 through a family called Over de Linden, was published in 1872, and immediately sparked fury, accusations of forgery, demands for suppression, debates that continue to this day. Either way, the book remains a remarkable artifact: a window into 19th-century romantic nationalism, the political uses of the past, and the powerful human impulse to invent golden ages.
