There is No Harm in Dancing

In 1884, evangelist W. E. Penn delivered a fiery lecture against dancing, convinced that the waltz and the polka were gateways to damnation. This slim, impassioned treatise argues that dance floors are nurseries of vice, where innocent amusement curdles into alcoholism, gambling, jealousy, disobedience, and worse. Penn, drawing on his work as an evangelist, catalogs a startling roster of sins he attributes to dancing: dishonesty, parental defiance, and even murder. His solution is characteristically Victorian: fathers and brothers must shield women from the perils of the ballroom. What emerges is not merely a curio of moral hysteria, but a revealing window into the anxieties of late Victorian Britain, where new forms of entertainment sparked panic about the dissolution of social order. Penn's earnest conviction, his earnest marshaling of 'evidence,' and his paternalistic urgency make this a fascinating artifact for anyone curious about how societies manufacture moral panics around pleasure itself.
