The Yankee Tea-Party; Or, Boston in 1773

It's December 16, 1773. Three British ships loaded with tea anchor in Boston Harbor, and across the city, men are gathering in secret, binding themselves to a promise that will alter the course of history. This is the story of that night, and the men who made it happen. Henry C. Watson frames his account within an Independence Day celebration in Boston, where veteran patriots of the Lebanon Club gather at a tavern to recount their roles in the Tea Party. Through Mr. Kinnison and his comrades, we hear the voices of ordinary men who chose defiance over submission, who dressed as Mohawk Indians and dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor's black water. Watson captures the tension of that dangerous night, the risk of hanging, the weight of the decision, the brotherhood that sustained them. Written when Revolutionary veterans were still alive to be interviewed, this 19th-century account carries the urgency of living memory. For readers who want to feel history not as a textbook but as a night of courage and consequence.
