The Wounded Eros: Sonnets
1908

Charles Gibson's 1908 sonnet sequence inhabits the burning center of unrequited love with an honesty that feels almost dangerous. These are not polite verses of courtly longing, but raw, muscular poems where the speaker wrangles with desire that wounds rather than satisfies. The collection opens in medias res of heartbreak: the beloved is present, beautiful, and utterly unreachable. Gibson's speaker celebrates this beauty even as it torments him, weaving images of roses and thorns, light and darkness, into sonnets that ache with the specific pain of loving someone who cannot love you back. The language carries the weight of early twentieth-century formality, yet the emotional truth beneath it rings completely modern. Each sonnet cycles through hope and despair, tenderness and fury, the speaker perpetually caught between surrender and refusal. What makes these poems endure is their refusal to resolve: the love remains unrequited, the wound stays open, and the speaker finds something like grace in that perpetual yearning. Gibson understood that sometimes the most profound human experience is wanting what we cannot have, and that this wanting itself can become a kind of possession.
