The World's Sixteen Crucified Saviors; Or, Christianity Before Christ

Published in 1875 by American freethinker Kersey Graves, this audacious work argues that the story of Jesus Christ was not original but rather the culmination of centuries of savior myths from around the ancient world. Drawing on Hinduism, Persian Zoroastrianism, Egyptian mythology, and Celtic traditions, Graves catalogs deity after deity who was born of a virgin, performed miracles, died a sacrificial death, and rose again - all centuries before the Christian era. The book examines sixteen specific "crucified saviors," from India's Krishna to Persia's Mithra to Mexico's Quetzalcoatl, demonstrating unsettling parallels in their birth stories, suffering, and ultimate fates. Graves writes not as a hostile critic but as a meticulous compiler of evidence, letting the patterns speak for themselves. While modern scholarship has qualified many of his specific claims, this remains a landmark text in the history of religious skepticism - the book that launched countless debates about whether Christianity invented its savior or inherited him. For readers interested in the roots of secular thought, the construction of religious mythology, or the forgotten heretics of American intellectual history.
